It is believed that the departed souls of the family come back as crows and hence on the third day of pongal, four types of cooked rice is kept on fresh turmeric leaves for the crows. Also, it is an important day for brother - sister relationship wherein the sister does this ritual for long life and prosperity of brothers and brothers gift their sisters something in return.
